Our five-week art camp intensive pilot program has quickly come to its final two weeks! Nothing but good news when speaking about our program sponsored by Community Solutions and The Brownsville Partnership!
We are bringing conceptual art ideas to 8-12-year-olds, and even a 6-year-old. The kids are absolutely soaking up every second of time spent with us. Together with TEEI co-founder Ian James Carr, each week we are completely amazed by our students’ ability to adapt, respond, and create!
Last week we surprised our kids (and now it’s your turn), with the news that our summer intensive will conclude with the creation of a mural in Brownsville! Commissioned by The Brownsville Partnership and Community Solutions, TEEI kids will be creating public art, activating a to be announced wall in East New York.
We immediately began taking our new found skills in applying conceptual thinking to object and line and translating them into the creation of a mural. Working with the kids through several rounds of sketch-ups, we begin with one simple line gesture and set our imaginations loose based on the initial line/shape/perspective.
The mural will be a collaborative effort. Each of our TEEI students will select one element from their sketches, and Ian will piece them together. I think a more rewarding thing when working with children is that they are more readily available to trust in a nurturing style of creative guidance. We are teaching our kids how to access an interpretation that is not beholden to how things seem to appear.
As with any new adventure, guidance helps to build confidence in this newness and our kids have been very receptive. We are showing them the way to an unbound creative license. Our mural will be the apex of our summer intensive and we expect local community leaders and political representatives to be present for this special occasion!
